Health and Safety Rules are a Priority for Companies – CIOB Report

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has come out with a survey about the employee opinion on the levels of attention paid to health and safety in companies in the construction industry.

The study took into consideration about 1,260 professionals to arrive at its findings. Of these, a massive 85% of top-level professionals in the construction business felt that health and safety norms followed by their companies have not been affected by the recession. In fact, about a third of them stated that the expenditure on these fields have actually increased over the last one year period. This includes expenditure on health and safety training conducted within the company. A smaller 12.6% of the people surveyed felt that the spending had decreased over the same period.

While a quarter of the respondents said that health and safety is not of paramount importance in their organisation despite necessary attention being given, 69% said that these measures are given high importance.

Responding to the question about ways to improve health and safety in the industry, many people said that awareness levels ought to be improved with respect to the necessity of such measures and benefits. Training also needs to be consistently provided for all employees irrespective of level, said the respondents.

A quarter of the respondents felt that no amount of safety regulation could be considered excessive as the regulations can save lives. However, 44% said that health and safety are adequately monitored and regulated and there is no excessive supervision. Several people opined that the Health and Safety Executive was under resourced. These people believe that active involvement of HSE can help curb industrial mishaps even further.
